Ok, so we aren't like most servers. We dont actually rent our servers from any hosting company, that both provides us with benefits and challenges. Ill list them below along with a explanation of why i chose the no rent path
Positives
+ Dont have to pay monthly
+ More control over the servers
+ Ability to expand as we see fit
+ Ability to tailor the network to our needs
+ Ability to monitor all aspects of our network and servers
Challenges
- Expensive setup (We have to actually buy the servers)
- Slower network (I dont have access to 1Gb/s)
- Less DDOS protection
The reason i took the path i did was because i hate not having complete control over the server. This way i have all the servers in my house and available at any time.
Where your money goes
I still have bills to pay, and the server contributes to those. Our total cost for the server is apx 100$ a month
80$CAN - Internet
20$CAN - Power
All your money goes into helping me pay for these and getting upgrades for the server!
Planned Upgrades
Our first and foremost upgrade is a new server box, i have a powerful one priced out and it totals around 450$CAN (400&USD). Once i have this new server our power will increase and we can host more games at once. I can take our old server and convert it to a router for the server.
Secondly is a network switch, this would allow me to have more then 1 ISP providing network and expand our server capacity, A cheap one would be best for our usage (300-500$)
into the future i would like to get more then 1 ISP to double or triple our network capacity. This coupled with more servers would give us an almost infinite amount of possibilities for games to host! An SQL database would also help us with Database intensive games (Such as Mount & Blade or LIF:YO). Any amount you donate will help us expand our network and allow us to grow into more games and more possibilities!
